Grade 7 Resources
Interaction with Ecosystems
1. Eco-Web Activity (PDF)
This activity can be used to introduce the idea of ecosystems and interconnectedness. It includes students using yarn to demonstrate the interconnectedness of species that they represent (via name card of different species). (IE7.2)
2. Earth Day EcoKids Food Web Lesson Plan (PDF)
(Lesson Plan courtesy of Convention on Biological Diversity, a program of the United Nations Environment Program)
This lesson introduces food webs and biodiversity. It is suggested for grades 4-6, but it has a fun activity to be adapted for Grade 7 to introduce interconnected food webs. (IE7.2)
3. BrainPop Cycles of the Earth (Website)
This activity will allow students to research, in groups, one Earth cycle and present it creatively through a story. Students will develop knowledge about the water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles, as well as address impacts currently affecting the cycles. (IE7.3)
4. Backyard Ecosystem (Website)
This activity allows students to combine the technology of cameras with the nature right outside their doors. This lesson requires students to develop knowledge about local ecosystems, living and nonliving organisms, food webs, and more. It gets the children out of the classroom into nature while learning about the environment around them. (IE7.2)
5. Can People Save the Land? (Website)
This activity challenges students to identify different changes to ecosystems. The role play activity will require students to see a different perspective of a land issue. The site includes assessment rubrics and student handouts. (IE7.4)
6. Food Web Video (YouTube)
Food webs and chains, as well as energy flow is explained through drawings and verbal explanation. (IE7.2)
7. GreenLearning Website (Website)
This website provides links and resources for teaching about ecosystems. Its focus is on Alberta ecosystems but much of it can be translated to Saskatchewan's ecosystems.

Mixtures and Solutions
1. Destination Conservation Saskatchewan - School Waste (PDF)
This activity allows students to separate and organize waste from the school into categories including recycling, compost, reusing, etc. to determine ways to reduce waste, as well as introduce students to separating mixtures and solutions, and analyze impacts of agricultural and industrial applications. (MS7.2)
2. EcoKids Oil Spill Lesson Plan (PDF)
This activity requires students to develop ideas for cleaning up an oil spill. It would be a good way to demonstrate effects on ecosystems, but it would demonstrate in a clearer way the impacts of industrial applications in our environment. (MS7.2)

Heat and Temperature
1. Destination Conservation Saskatchewan - Energy Efficient Homes (PDF)
This lesson addresses Greenhouse Gases and residential energy use to determine representative circle graphs illustrating energy uses. Students would understand the heating techniques that contribute to GHG emissions. (HT7.1)
2. Global, Environmental and Outdoor Education Council - Ecological Footprints (DOC)
This unit allows students to discover heating and cooling technologies used while evaluating their ecological footprint in the "How did my footprint get so BIG?" activity. (HT7.1)
